President’s Message for September/October

Welcome to the Philadelphia Chapter of IFMA.
GREAT NEWS we received “Best in Class” recognition for a Facility Management Professional Association!
IFMA is the largest and most widely recognized professional association for facility management, with 125 chapters in 65 countries and over 18,500 members strong. Each year IFMA searches for “Best in Class” representation among its chapters, awarding them “Chapter of the Year” recognition. To be considered, chapter candidates must exhibit exceptional support of the facility management profession and operational excellence in the following areas: membership marketing, member retention, professional development, education, communication, financial strategy, volunteer recognition, strategic planning, and succession planning.

We are pleased to announce that your Chapter, 340 plus members strong, has won this prestigious International Award, the Philadelphia Chapter of IFMA, Large Chapter of the Year Winner !!! We hope that you will be able to join us at the Awards of Excellence banquet on Friday, October 26th at World Workplace in New Orleans, Louisiana to witness the Chapter receiving this award.

In the last issue of Insite, we reviewed the Chapter’s enhanced strategic planning process. In this issue we will highlight two other areas of our operational excellence model: volunteer recognition and succession planning.

Volunteer Recognition: The Philadelphia Chapter of IFMA clearly recognizes that the long-term sustainability of our chapter lies squarely on the shoulders of our volunteers. With over 50 dedicated and engaged volunteers from a diverse mix of professional and associate backgrounds, we strongly believe our approach to motivating our members to volunteer is a critical form of positive reinforcement that augments our other tangible recognition efforts. Recognition starts at the first contact point with the prospective volunteer in a face-to-face discussion with a board or program chair member. Identifying “What’s In It For Me” (WIIFM) is critical to this process. We ask the prospective volunteer whether they want to learn, make a difference, enjoy being part of a community, or just have fun.  Typical motivators for volunteering that we employ are:

Ø       Praise for their accomplishments

Ø       Setting them up for accomplishment of tangible projects

Ø       Presenting the opportunity to influence others by acting as a team leader or mentor

Ø       Chapter-wide visibility of Awards or special gifts

Succession Planning: We recognize that succession planning is one of the most critical and difficult challenges that associations face in an effort to promote the long-term sustainability of their group.  For the Philadelphia Chapter of IFMA, it is an ongoing process of systematically identifying, assessing, engaging and preparing talent to ensure strong leadership for all key positions on the team.  Succession planning goes hand-in-hand with the volunteer process as current volunteers and members along with past board members form the basis for identifying candidates for advancement into positions of leadership. Some of the measures taken to prepare interested candidates for the rigors of the office include:

Ø       Educating and providing mentored leadership opportunities on committees, special task force and other volunteer opportunities

Ø       Shadowing a current leader

Ø       Subsidizing two candidates at IFMA leadership conferences which is in line with our strategic plan

Ø       Discussing responsibilities with past volunteers to better understand the position

Ø       Demonstrating flexibility with leadership roles to best utilize a candidate's skills

Ø       Providing comprehensive, up to date Chapter Operations Manual

Recognition and succession planning are two important issues we and our clients address in the workplace on a regular basis. Enjoy reading about other “workplace” issues right here in InSite, your International Award Winning Newsletter.
